Salt-free systems leave the lime in the water. Dried droplets therefore still leave limescale marks on shower screens and taps.

Scale prevention instead of softening

Most salt-free systems focus on scale prevention, not on softening. They do not remove the lime from the water, but try to stop it from settling in pipes and appliances. The water therefore does not really become softer, and that has two noticeable consequences.

Firstly, limescale marks remain. When water droplets dry on the shower screen or the tap, the water evaporates but the minerals are left behind as visible marks.

Secondly, there is no soft-water effect. Because the hardness minerals are still in the water, soap and detergent do not work any better, you keep using the same amount of detergent and you do not get that same soft-water feeling in the shower.

The Belgian consumer organisation Test Aankoop also notes that salt-free systems do not really remove lime from the water. Moreover, effectiveness varies greatly from one technology to another.

Magnetic and electronic (pulse) systems

These devices are fitted around or on the water pipe. Magnets or electric coils are supposed to influence the lime in the water so that it settles less easily. The lime simply stays in the water.

Advantages

  • Cheap
  • Easy to install
  • Completely maintenance-free

Disadvantages

  • The water does not become softer.
  • There is hardly any independent evidence that these devices actually work.
  • Authorities and consumer organisations found no measurable effect on limescale. So be cautious with this category.

Polyphosphate dosing

With polyphosphate dosing, a small device containing chemical crystals is fitted to the water pipe. As the water flows through the device, a small amount of polyphosphate is released. This forms a smooth protective layer around the lime particles, so that they stick less easily to pipes and appliances. The device therefore does not remove the lime from the water. Think of sticky little blocks given a smooth coating: they are still there, but cling less readily.

Advantages

  • Cheap
  • Compact and easy to install
  • Can help limit limescale when fitted just before a specific appliance or on a cold-water pipe.

Disadvantages

  • The water does not become softer.
  • Dried droplets still leave limescale marks on the shower screen or tap.
  • Above roughly 60 °C the protective layer breaks down. The system is therefore less suitable for a water heater, central-heating boiler or dishwasher.
  • The dosing is irregular. Standing water can absorb too much polyphosphate and taste different, while fast-flowing water sometimes picks up too little.
  • Fitting it on the main supply pipe adds polyphosphate to all your drinking water.

CO2 dosing

A CO2 dosing unit adds small amounts of carbon dioxide to the mains water. This is food-grade CO2, the same gas that gives sparkling water its bubbles. The addition makes the water slightly more acidic, and in slightly acidic water lime simply stays dissolved instead of settling. The lime therefore remains in the water, but in a form that no longer causes scale.

Advantages

  • All minerals stay in the water.
  • The water remains perfectly drinkable.
  • No salt or waste water is needed.
  • One CO2 cylinder lasts a family about a year.

Disadvantages

  • The water does not really become softer, because the hardness remains.
  • The purchase price is higher than that of a classic water softener with salt.
  • The dosing is usually fixed and does not adapt to the water flow. As a result, there is sometimes too much or too little CO2 in the water.

Galvanic and catalytic systems

These devices contain a zinc anode: a piece of zinc that dissolves very slowly, releasing tiny amounts of zinc into the water. This zinc is supposed to push the lime into a different crystal form that adheres less well to pipes and appliances. The lime therefore stays in the water, but would cause less scale.

Advantages

  • Maintenance-free
  • Compact
  • Safe for drinking water

Disadvantages

  • The water does not become softer.
  • Independent evidence is limited.
  • High effectiveness percentages often come from reports commissioned by the manufacturers themselves. Independent laboratory research found a clearly smaller effect.

Template-assisted crystallisation (TAC)

With this technology, the water flows through a cartridge containing special beads. On the surface of these beads, the lime clusters into tiny crystals, which then detach and simply flow along with the water. The lime therefore no longer settles on pipes and appliances, but is flushed away naturally.

Advantages

  • No salt needed
  • No waste water
  • No power needed

Disadvantages

  • The water does not become softer: the hardness stays in the water, so limescale marks on the shower screen and tap remain.
  • You do not get the same soft feeling as with water from an ion exchanger.
  • The beads have to be replaced periodically (usually every few years).

Reverse osmosis (RO)

With reverse osmosis, the water is forced under pressure through a very fine filter membrane. This membrane holds back almost everything dissolved in the water: not only lime, but also heavy metals, pesticides and PFAS. The unit is usually installed under the kitchen sink and supplies very pure water to a single tap.

Advantages

  • Very pure drinking water at the tap where you need it.
  • Besides lime, unwanted substances such as heavy metals and pesticides also disappear from the water.

Disadvantages

  • The unit usually treats only one tap, and therefore not all the water in the house.
  • It does not protect the water heater, bathroom or washing machine against limescale.
  • For every litre of pure water, about three to four litres of waste water are lost, although more economical systems exist.
  • The membrane also holds back useful minerals. Some systems add them back afterwards.

Reverse osmosis therefore does not replace a water softener for the whole house.

Chemical softening (milk of lime, soda, sodium hydroxide)

Adding milk of lime, soda or sodium hydroxide to the water makes the dissolved calcium and magnesium clump together into solid flakes. These flakes sink to the bottom or are filtered out, and the lime leaves the water as sludge.

Advantages

  • Very effective
  • Proven on a large scale
  • A standard method in industry and in drinking-water production plants.

Disadvantages

  • Not suitable for domestic use
  • The sludge has to be collected and disposed of continuously.
  • Hazardous substances are involved.

Comparison table: all technologies side by side

The table below compares all technologies. Look especially at the column Lime removed?: only ion exchange (and reverse osmosis, at a single tap) actually removes the lime from the water.

Which solution suits your situation?

  • You do not want salt and only want to limit scale: TAC is the best-substantiated salt-free alternative; CO2 dosing preserves the minerals. Be critical of magnetic, electronic and galvanic claims.
  • You mainly want pure drinking water (PFAS, nitrate, etc.) from a single tap: reverse osmosis, possibly alongside a softener.
  • You want genuinely soft water throughout the house (less detergent, no limescale marks, the soft-water feeling): then an ion exchanger with salt is the proven choice. Read our overview of the types of water softeners to choose the right type.
