Buying salt for water softening
You are advised to think carefully before buying salt for water softening. There are various types and qualities. Salt for water softening can be bought in the form of salt crystals, tablets or blocks.
The type of salt you buy doesn't really matter, with the exception of salt blocks.
Salt blocks are square/rectangular and weigh around 2 kg. These salt blocks can only be used in water softeners that have a salt tray specifically designed for salt blocks.
Did you know that some water softener manufacturers have designed them to only accommodate specific sizes of salt blocks, thus ensuring you have to buy the same brand?
Many other brands, however, allow you to use various types of salt for water softening, in the form of salt tablets or salt crystals. As mentioned earlier, the shape doesn’t make much difference. The variety of salt used for water softening has no effect on the way it works or the salt consumption of your water softener.
The purity and quality of the salt is much more important! In order to check the quality of the salt for water softening, you are advised to check the packaging.
Good quality salt will be certified according to EN973 type A. With this certificate, you can be sure that you are buying top quality salt. Pure salt for water softening is also good for the longevity of your device.
