Types of gritting salt
There are various types of gritting salt. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the most common variety. This salt can be extracted from old, dried-up seas (mined salt) or via the evaporation of sea water (sea salt).
Gritting salt can also vary in terms of grain size, moisture content and purity.
There are also alternative gritting agents, such as calcium chloride, or NOCOR de-icing grains. These alternatives are usually applied to sensitive surfaces, such as metal or concrete, to keep them free from ice.
