ZOUTMAN and Go Ocean: partnering for greater marine biodiversity
ZOUTMAN and the sea are inextricably linked. The ocean provides us with our most essential raw material, and from this deep connection, we feel a natural drive to give back. That is why we proudly support Go Ocean, a Belgian start-up dedicated to strengthening biodiversity in our seas and oceans, both globally and locally.
Go Ocean is dedicated to strengthening biodiversity in our seas and oceans, both globally and locally.
Strengthening natural wealth, from coral to oysters
The ocean is the lungs of our planet. Go Ocean works to increase the resilience of vulnerable marine areas worldwide: from protecting colorful coral reefs and mangroves to planting seagrass meadows.
Closer to home, we are joining forces for the North Sea, where the project focuses on restoring oyster beds. These natural reefs act as the "engineers" of our sea:
- Natural filters: Oysters purify the water and improve water quality.
- Marine nurseries: The reefs provide a safe home and food for countless fish species and other underwater life.
Concrete impact in the Belgian North Sea
With ZOUTMAN’s active support, 65 oyster batches have already been placed in the Belgian North Sea. These structures serve as the crucial starting point for new, self-sustaining oyster reefs, contributing to a more robust biodiversity and a North Sea teeming with life.
Clean salt, clear goals
Our partnership with Go Ocean is a logical extension of ZOUTMAN’s sustainable path. We consciously choose sea salt because its harvest emits up to 30 times less CO₂ than mined salt. It is a pure natural product, created by the power of sun and wind. Moreover, the salt pans form a unique and vibrant ecosystem: a safe haven where rare birds and marine animals feel right at home.
Strengthening the ocean is just one part of a larger plan. We are working step-by-step toward a climate-neutral future by 2047 by continuing to invest in:
- Maximum energy efficiency and water conservation.
- Innovative, circular packaging.
- Sustainable logistical solutions.
The mineral-rich pans are a paradise for salt-loving microorganisms, which in turn attract graceful flamingos and rare wading birds. In these unique, salty oases, a bustling ecosystem thrives where nature can take its course undisturbed.
